Description
Do you remember being a student in college and having a mentor? How did this person assist in your academic journey? Are you currently suffering from burnout with your students? This session will provide you with resources to incorporate leadership and mentoring in your lessons, assist your students, and assist in your instructor burnout. We will discuss, why you are needed, valued, and a hidden resource to encourage your students not only academically but mentally. In turn we will self reflect on ways to become a better mentor, as well as mentee from individuals were aspire to gain knowledge from.

Jessica D. McCarty is a native Mobilian, currently a Doctoral student studying Instructional Design and Development and Gerontology at The University of South Alabama. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services with concentrations in African American Studies, Gerontology, and Sociology, and a Master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Educational Leadership. She is the founder of MLCS, which serve as consulting companies aimed towards research in education, mentoring, leadership, and career development. Her goal is to create an Age Friendly University for Seniors, and serve as President of an Institution of Higher Education. Throughout her educational journey she has received several honors and awards, the honors include: Outstanding Undergraduate in Gerontology 2013-2014, Chris Myers Extra Mile Student Service Award 2014-2015, AHEPA Vision Award 2015-2016, USA Dean's List: Fall 2013, Fall 2014, Summer 2016, Donald R. South Faculty Service Award 2016-2017, and has been a USA Student Delegate 2017-2018. She has also served on several committees and advisory boards, they include: Legacy Leadership Institute – June 2013, Legacy Leadership Institute, 2.0 Workshop – July 2015, VIA Health, Fitness & Enrichment Center 5 Points Expo, Advisory Board at Blount High School, Generational Resiliency Conference (Guest Speaker VIA Enrichment Center, Organizer for Careers in Aging Fair 2018 (USA), Harvard University Graduate School of Education, National Institute of Urban Leaders(Summer 2019), Panelist for Women of Excellence and panelist for Black Student Union-The University of South Alabama 2019, MIT AgeLab Omega Summit(Fall 2019) AHEPA Health Fair 2019, Roundtable participant Mid-South Sociological Conference 2020, Participant in The Conference on Teaching and Learning(COTL 2021& 2022). Ms. Jessica D. McCarty is stated as saying, "helping others in need is the least selfish thing you can do."
