Abstract
In this interview, Leon Maisel is interviewed by Ryan Morini and Jada Jones about the Down the Bay community of Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Maisel describes his memories growing up Down the Bay, and memories of his parents’ grocery store in the same neighborhood. He reflects on the complexities of growing up as the child of white Jewish immigrants in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Mobile while Jim Crow segregation was still legally in effect. His memories explore ways that segregation was both challenged and enforced by communities of Mobile in that era, and he also describes ways that particular individuals through their own agency reinforced or resisted segregation. Dr. Maisel also shares a few of his memories of attending the University of South Alabama, and of the impacts that the closing of Brookley Air Force Base had on Down the Bay.
