Abstract
In this interview, Robert Battles is interviewed by Jada Jones and Ryan Morini at the McCall Library at the University of South Alabama. Mr. Battles begins the interview with some of his family history; his parents were from the Maysville neighborhood, but his grandmother was a cook for St. Matthew’s Catholic school in the Down the Bay neighborhood. He shares several stories about his grandmother, and stories from his experiences as one of the first Black students to graduate from the newly-opened University of South Alabama. He also discusses civil rights leader Julian Bond’s visit to Mobile.
