Abstract

The aim of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of an algorithm used to distribute cargo throughout a simulated train system. The simulated train system and its implications as a tool are discussed. The evaluation will be supported with data returned from a set of trial runs of the system. The train system is composed of a length of tracks, upon which reside a number of stations. Both the train and the stations are capable of holding cargo, and all cargo has both a designated station it needs to be delivered to, and a deadline by which it needs to be delivered. Given that the train has a limited cargo capacity and needs to travel between stations to deliver cargo, the system needs an algorithm to calculate the path for the train to take to maximize the amount of cargo delivered on time. This algorithm, as well as methods for determining the maximal and minimal effectiveness of it, will be discussed.
