Abstract

This study examines factors affecting the adoption of communication technologies in the classroom. It aims to identify potential reasons why faculty members may not readily adopt new classroom technologies. A survey was administered to faculty members at the University of South Alabama Survey questions were designed to determine computer anxiety levels, frequency of use of current classroom communication technologies, and likeliness to adopt new communication technologies in the classroom.

The participants were split into two groups based on their levels of computer anxiety. Those with higher levels of computer anxiety were significantly more likely to downplay the importance of technology and were significantly less likely to adopt new technologies. It was also found that the frequency of current use of technologies in the classroom _was correlated with the likelihood of adopting new communication technologies in the classroom in the future. These findings led to the conclusion that providing faculty members with more exposure to technology would increase the likelihood of adoption.
