Medical Education Thru Graphic Novels, by Jamie Stanfield, University of Southern Mississippis
Jamie Stanfield
Jamie Stanfield, Science, Nursing & Health Librarian at the University of Southern Mississippi, shares about using Graphic Novels for Medical Education.
In this presentation, audience members will learn how graphic medicine can help increase understanding of the many aspects of healthcare, often described by recipients of healthcare or those with illness, in their words. Though not all graphic medicine derives from healthcare patients, many do, and these graphic works can give a voice to the voiceless, those not often discussed in textbooks or medical lectures. They may be created by a family member, friend, or healthcare worker as they experienced caring for a loved one with an illness. They can teach how to prevent infection, how to provide basic first aid, and other aspects of healthcare. They appeal to visual learners and stimulate the brain more than written text! They are often cost-effective, as compared to some medical texts and they can even be one-page handouts given to large numbers of people, of all literacy levels.
Presentation hosted by the USA Libraries Art Galleries & Charles M. Baugh Biomedical Library, University of South Alabama. -
