Abstract
In this interview, Sister Genevieve of St. Teresa is interviewed by Travis Davis about the Down the Bay community of Mobile, Alabama. Sr. Genevieve grew up Down the Bay, though at the time of the interview she had been a cloistered nun of the Carmelite order for over 70 years; the interview focuses on her memories prior to that time. She begins by describing the boundaries of Down the Bay. She also relates some of her family history, including the relationship between Mon Louis Island and Down the Bay, and the section of Mobile once known as “Creole Town.” Sr. Genevieve discusses her memories of segregation in Mobile, and her experiences with integration as a cloistered nun. She also reflects on Catholicism in Mobile as she knew it growing up, and her path to becoming the first Carmelite nun from Mobile.
