Abstract

In this recording, Valena McCants is interviewed by Kern Jackson and Ryan Morini about the Down the Bay community of Mobile. Ms. McCants relates being born in Chicago but growing up in the Down the Bay neighborhood as a child in the 1920s. She describes the boundaries of the Down the Bay neighborhood as she knew them at that time, and some of the businesses that operated then and the prices for things like a loaf of bread or a ride on the streetcar. She also recalls some of the families living in that area, including her neighbors, shop owners, some of her teachers growing up, and a number of other community members.
