Abstract
In this recording, Valenia Green is interviewed by Andre Taylor in the kitchen at Via Emilia restaurant in Mobile, Alabama. The interview is part of Taylor’s dissertation project, in which the interview takes place while the narrator cooks an unwritten family recipe. Ms. Green cooks her grandmother’s chicken fricassee, and describes how her grandmother used to cook it and the role that food played in the household when she was growing up. She also discusses some of her family history, her grandmother’s role in the Down the Bay community, and reflects on the social and cultural dynamics that made the community what it was.
