Abstract
In this recording, Kenneth Lang is interviewed by Kern Jackson in Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Lang grew up Down the Bay, and he shares his memories of the neighborhood and its social and cultural dynamics. He describes in detail the processes that went into the underground lottery, aka the numbers. He also describes the boundaries of Down the Bay, some of the prominent businesses and landmarks, and discusses the territoriality that existed between neighborhoods. Mr. Lang also recalls learning football from Reuben Nichols, and the form the rivalry between Down the Bay and Maysville took through football. He concludes the interview talking about his experiences being drafted into the US military during the Vietnam War.
