Abstract
In this recording, Wali Arif Mustafa is interviewed by Kern Jackson at Arlington Park in Mobile, Alabama. At times in the recording, helicopters passing overhead make the audio difficult to decipher. Mr. Mustafa describes growing up Down the Bay, and discusses his father’s work, his neighbors, and the family’s move from Letohatchee. He talks about Jim Crow segregation in Mobile, and also the childhood race relations that he experienced. Mr. Mustafa talks about playing baseball, including where he and his friends would play and where they would get discounted cookies to affordably sustain their energy. He discusses a number of businesses that he can recall. Mr. Mustafa also speaks on his experiences on his path converting to Islam, and reflects on being a Black Muslim in Mobile.
