Abstract

In this interview, Clauzell McCovey is interviewed by Ryan Morini at his home about his memories of the Down the Bay community. Mr. McCovey discusses the neighborhood and its social and cultural dynamics as he remembers them, and shares stories of games that children played and some of the adventures that they would get into. He also shares memories of athletics Down the Bay, and the relationship to baseball Hall of Famers from the neighborhood like Hank Aaron, Amos Otis, and his own brother Willie. Mr. McCovey shares his thoughts on the cultural and racial dynamics of Mobile, infused with stories of his experiences living in Los Angeles for a number of years before moving back Down the Bay. He discusses some of the impacts of urban renewal, and the changes that he has seen in the neighborhood over the years.
