Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of mortality in the United States, with survival largely dependent on early recognition and prompt bystander intervention. Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use are critical components of early care and are associated with improved patient outcomes. However, both recognition of cardiac arrest and bystander response remain inconsistent, contributing to gaps in pre-emergency medical services (EMS) care. Bystander response is further limited by lack of training and uncertainty in recognizing cardiac arrest and performing CPR. Access to CPR training is often constrained by time and cost barriers, reducing participation among the general population. Additionally, few scalable, high-quality programs exist that are specifically designed to train undergraduate students, despite universities representing a large and accessible population.
