Abstract

For the most part, the modern day fishing lure appeals to a fish’s visual senses, as it is designed to resemble the prey of fish. However, fishing lures can also be engineered to appeal to a fish's sense of territory, aggression, or curiosity. Studies have shown that fish are attracted to a small amount of voltage. If a fishing lure could replicate this voltage, it would be able to appeal to a fish's electrical senses, as well as its sense of curiosity. With the fishing industry commanding an extensive market, it is possible that such a lure would be able to be profitable. In order for the proposed lure to be marketable, it would have to follow all federal and state environmental regulations. The proposed study seeks to decide the feasibility of a voltage emitting fishing lure, with the voltage being produced by the use of piezoelectric materials. With some states banning the use of lead in aquatic products, lead-free piezoelectric materials could be used as a viable alternative to produce a small voltage in the fishing lure. The study will determine if a fishing lure could emit a voltage using piezoelectric materials, and if such a lure could be profitable in the current fishing industry.
