Abstract

Stanley Chassin was born in 1948 and grew up in Mobile, Alabama where his grandfather had served as Orthodox rabbi of the synagogue. Chassin’s father helped instill a strong sense of Jewish identity in him. Chassin became very involved in the Mobile Jewish community as part of the Trialogue and Christian-Jewish Dialogue conversations between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. He recounts an important encounter with an infamous Ku Klux Klan member and its reverberations in his life. Chassin also discusses the tensions between the Temple and the synagogue.
