Abstract
Mark Berkin was born in 1938 and grew up in Mobile after his family relocated from Middletown, Connecticut. Berkin recalls his earliest memories in Mobile where his father owned a retail business based on a credit system. Berkin describes a racially segregated Mobile, and a close knit Jewish community that engaged with both Black and white. Berkin also shares extensive memories of Ahavas Chesed congregation and intra-communal dynamics.
