Abstract
In this interview, Lelia Roberts Reed by Jada Jones and Ryan Morini in Mobile, Alabama. Ms. Reed’s daughter, Yvonne Matthews, is also present as an interlocutor. Ms. Reed describes her memories of growing up on the family farm in McIntosh, Alabama, and some of her family history. She also reflects on her first experiences closer to Mobile, first in Prichard and then later moving Down the Bay with her husband. She describes the process of settling into Down the Bay, and the ties she maintained with family in McIntosh. Both Ms. Reed and Ms. Matthews reflect on the social and cultural dynamics of their neighborhood Down the Bay, and Ms. Matthews shares about her and her father’s singing careers. They conclude the interview reflecting on their experiences with urban renewal, and the impact of Hurricanes Camille and Frederic.
