Abstract

In this recording, Jamie Hobbs is interviewed by Jada Jones and Ryan Morini at the McCall Library at the University of South Alabama. Ms. Hobbs relates her experiences growing up Down the Bay, and some of her family history. She talks about her experiences attending Fisk University. And Ms. Hobbs discusses race and racism in Mobile, including the complexities of colorism, and the dynamics of segregation and integration as she experienced and witnessed them. She describes some of the people and places, particularly businesses, that she remembers from the neighborhood, and talks about her experiences in Catholic school—including being taught in elementary school by Black nuns, the Oblate Sisters of Providence. Ms. Hobbs also relates this history to current events in Mobile, and relates the historical impacts of urban renewal to the active gentrification pressures on the neighborhood at the time of the interview.
