Abstract

In this interview, Leonard Stiell is interviewed by Ryan Morini at his home about his memories of growing up in the Down the Bay community. Mr. Stiell shares knowledge of his family’s roots in Mobile, and some of his memories of foodways in the neighborhood and of his mother’s and grandmother’s cooking. He relates some of the jobs he worked growing up, and describes the popguns that children Down the Bay made using reeds and chinaberries, and other forms of recreation. Mr. Stiell describes the boundaries of Down the Bay from his experience, and shares some memories from attending high school at Most Pure Heart of Mary. He reflects on the impacts of urban renewal and I-10 on the community, and mentions some of the accomplished people who came from Down the Bay.
