Abstract

In this interview, Audrey Cunningham is interviewed by Ryan Morini at her home, discussing her memories of growing up in and adjacent to the Down the Bay community. Ms. Cunningham shares some of the roots that her family and her husband’s family have in Mobile, including memories of her grandmother, Sarah Godwin. She also recalls some of the businesses that operated in the neighborhood years ago, and relationships between Down the Bay and other neighborhoods in Mobile. Ms. Cunningham is a descendant of Lucrecia Perryman, and she describes the experience of learning about the archaeological work that uncovered aspects of Ms. Perryman’s history. She describes memories of segregation and of the Civil Rights Movement, memories of John L. LeFlore, and her father’s experiences as a postman in Mobile. The interview concludes with Ms. Cunningham’s reflections on the impact of urban renewal on Down the Bay.
