Abstract
In this recording, Gregory Waselkov is interviewed by Ruby Staten about the history of Blakeley Bluff and the surrounding Mobile-Tensaw River Delta area. Dr. Waselkov describes how he became interested in pursuing a career in archaeology, and the path that led him to working at the University of South Alabama. He discusses some of the archaeological excavations that he has led in the Blakeley area, including a number of Civil War-era sites. Dr. Waselkov also discusses the prevalence of illegal archaeological looting and pothunting in the area. Much of the interview moves between discussing the history of the area since the 17th century—particularly including Civil War history, and Native American history such as the Red Stick War—and current efforts relating to the Historic Blakeley park and other aspects of historic preservation.
