Abstract
In this recording, John Sledge is interviewed by Ruby Staten, Kathy Cooke, and Lex McKinnell about his knowledge of and connections to Blakeley Bluff. At the time of the interview, Mr. Sledge served as an architectural historian for the city of Mobile, which he foregrounds as providing much of his frame of reference for the interview. He talks about the diverse ecology of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, and its diverse human history in relation to the Civil War, the colonial era, and precontact Native American lifeways in the area. He discusses the natural beauty of the area, while also discussing the management and planning challenges to protecting that ecology and that beauty—and the importance of finding solutions. Mr. Sledge also discusses the delta as a sort of frontier or borderlands, politically and socially. He concludes by discussing the legend, and ersatz history, of Prince Madoc.
